Virginia Main Street Design Services Portal

The purpose of this portal is to provide Virginia’s designated Main Street communities and Directors with the tools to use the design services provided by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) through Commonwealth Preservation Group.

Practical design guidance for visible improvements in Main Street districts.

Since 1985, the Virginia Main Street (VMS) program has supported community-driven revitalization across the Commonwealth. In July 2025, Commonwealth Preservation Group (CPG) was selected as the program’s design partner, providing conceptual design services and technical assistance to Advancing Main Street communities statewide.

CPG works directly with local VMS program directors, property owners, business tenants, and municipalities to develop visual, practical recommendations for improving commercial building facades, sites, signage, and streetscapes. Simply put—if it is visible from the public right-of-way within a designated Main Street district, CPG can help address it.

This work includes façade renderings, sign design, streetscape concepts, and on-the-ground guidance, along with trainings on preservation best practices and targeted support tailored to each community.

Grounded in the Main Street Approach, CPG’s work advances the four core areas of Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion, and Organization—helping communities move from ideas to action with clear, achievable solutions.
