Project Goals
Hotel Petersburg is a c1915 Italian Renaissance Revival building that served travelers for six decades as the only major hotel in downtown Petersburg. In 2024, Hotel Petersburg reopened to the public after a prolonged vacancy.
Project Design
Empty since the early 1970s, the building had extensive deterioration, damage, and outdated systems; overall, though, the building maintained its original design and layout.
Priority was placed on retaining any remaining historic features within public spaces: the marble staircase, terrazzo flooring, and wood paneling. Systems were sensitively upgraded, while meeting the standards for rehabilitation. The original hotel rooms were combined with adjacent rooms to create larger spaces to suit modern needs, while retaining as much historic material as possible.
Challenges & Accomplishments
Prior to the start of the project, the Hotel’s cornice and marquees on the front of the building had been removed.
Using historic photographs and postcards, the construction team successfully replicated the cornice and marquees to match the original c1915 design.
