Project partners hoped that the update to the Historic District would significantly increase the number of resources that would be eligible for State and Federal incentives, thereby amplifying other efforts for economic development and financial investment in the county.

Project Goals
The Brunswick County Industrial Development Authority and the Town of Lawrenceville hired CPG to update the original National Register Nomination from 2000.
Project Design
An National Register nomination update required that all resources within the original district boundary be re-surveyed and re-evaluated for contributing status to the district.
Additional research supported the expansion of the period and areas of significance based on the extensive contributions of local residents and leaders like James Solomon Russell and Nellie Pratt Russell, and the civil rights activism of Saint Paul’s College students during the mid-twentieth century. An expansion of the period of significance meant that 105 more resources within the existing boundary now contribute to the historic district and thus be eligible for financial incentives for rehabilitation.
Challenges & Accomplishments
The Town of Lawrenceville had seen a decline in population and economic growth in recent decades.
This project served as a catalyst for additional economic development and preservation planning projects in Lawrenceville, many of which CPG has also assisted with, and was the first joint venture by the Town and County IDA in many years.
