This historic district nomination captures some of the most architecturally impressive buildings in the city and state and made smaller-scale buildings along Winston-Salem’s 4th Street corridor and surrounding blocks eligible for financial incentives to spur economic development elsewhere in the city.

Project Goals
Long-term clients hired CPG to prepare an historic district nomination for the downtown Winston-Salem commercial district.
Project Design
Research, survey, and coordination with local and state government officials informed the preparation of survey materials and the district nomination.
CPG worked closely with City of Winston-Salem staff and NC SHPO staff to develop the district boundary and an appropriate period of significance that spanned nearly an entire century. CPG also worked with NC SHPO staff to explore and test new processes in survey material development for historic districts.
Challenges & Accomplishments
A failed National Register district nomination in the late 1980s due to lack of public support caused hesitation even among the City’s most active preservation advocates to pursue the effort once again.
Through a robust public engagement effort and close coordination with local and state officials, CPG prepared a successful nomination for the Winston-Salem Downtown Historic District that not only gained support from property owners but also gained recognition in local news outlets.
