Project Goals

Revitalization of the historically significant Hayden High School Complex to provide senior support services to the Western Tidewater region was at the core of this project.

Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia (SSSEVA) envisioned the revitalized Hayden High School as a place that could positively impact the health, educational achievement, and economic quality of life for all residents in the community.

Project Design

CPG provided an array of services including preparing a Virginia Landmarks and National Register nomination, Section 106 compliance and historic tax credit consulting.

The project retained the historic public assembly spaces on the ground floor and introduced affordable senior housing within classroom spaces on the upper floor.

Challenges & Accomplishments

This project was aspirational from the launch; funding, staffing, and programming challenges existed throughout the duration of the renovation.

During the course of this renovation, funding streams were reconstituted, the architect retired, and every key member of the project team except CPG changed. Consequently, CPG provided our typical suite of services and also shared important background information and knowledge on the project when new team members came on board.
