CPG conducted research and assisted the property owner in the project’s early stages to ensure the overall project design allowed the use of historic rehabilitation tax credits for all phases of work.

Project Goals
Assembly is a 5-story, multi-phase project that converted three connected buildings - two historic department stores and a warehouse - into a “community of creative businesses”.
Project Design
The iconic atrium staircase was strategically maintained and features open areas at each landing.
This design respects the department store’s original layout and offer areas that foster communal interaction.
Challenges & Accomplishments
A strong argument had to be made for the historical connectivity of all three buildings so that tax credits could apply to all phases of work.
Assembly’s collaborative, creative work space that houses numerous design and technology companies is one of a kind in the Downtown Norfolk area. Honored with a 2024 Preservation Award from Preservation Virginia, the space is home to private offices, community spaces, and commercial storefronts.
