Commercial Buildings
The reuse of these often formerly vacant buildings has added much needed economic activity and foot traffic to downtowns across Virginia. The 700 block of High Street in Portsmouth is an excellent example of this type of revitalization. The project resulted in rehabilitation of an entire city block including retail, restaurant, office and residential. There is a common interior circulation pattern, secure entry for upper floor tenants, an interior atrium, restaurant and retail space on the first floor. With the help of historic rehabilitation tax credits, this group of former furniture stores and related storage warehouses has been converted into a mixed-use property with a restaurant on the first floor and condominiums on the second and third floors.
